Contrary to most European countries, Polish patent activity in 2017 was again driven by universities and research institutes constituting four of Poland’s largest patent applicants: Jagiellonian University (7 applications), the University of Gdańsk (6 applications), the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (6 applications) and the Medical University of Warsaw.
The number of patents granted to Polish research institutes and industries (also referred to as inventors) increased by 20% compared to last year and reached a record number of 216 European granted patents out of 469 Polish patent applications. The European patent grant procedure involves substantive examinations of the invention and meeting all legal requirements. EPO’s centralized patent granting procedure guarantees applicants with a high-quality patent protection in 38 EPO Member States.
